Fishing in Sweden — Predator Adventures in Småland

Sweden is the promised land for many anglers — and rightly so. Few countries in Europe offer as much water, as little fishing pressure, and such healthy fish populations. I've been making regular trips to Småland for several years, and every tour confirms it: Sweden is different.

The lakes in Småland are crystal-clear, often only a few metres deep, and surrounded by endless forests. No concrete banks, no commercial shipping, no crowds at the water. Instead: absolute tranquility, pike over one metre, and perch that would be considered fish of a lifetime in Germany. On top of that, strong zander populations in the murkier, deeper lakes of the region.

What makes Sweden so special: the Right of Public Access (Allemansrätten) allows free camping and movement in nature. With a Fiskekort — an affordable fishing permit often available online or at the local supermarket — you gain access to hundreds of lakes. Many waters see barely any fishing pressure and hold surprisingly strong populations.

My favourite setup for Sweden: for pike, a 2.40 m rod rated 30–100 g, rigged with Bulldawgs, jerkbaits, or large soft plastics. For perch and zander, I switch to a lighter rod rated 7–28 g and fish with drop shot rigs or small soft plastics on 5–10 g jig heads. A wire leader is mandatory in Sweden — pike lurk everywhere.

Best timing: late May to early July for post-spawn pike and the active perch season. September and October are perfect for trophy zander in the deeper lakes. If you experience the midsummer nights, you'll be fishing in daylight until nearly midnight — an unforgettable experience.
